What’s Included in the Dynamic MIDI Playback Pack

This pack includes two Max for Live devices for complete playback control:

Dynamic MIDI Playback Switcher: Automatically mutes backing beats when you start playing live. Playback resumes instantly when you release keys or pads. Includes retriggering support for smooth sustained chord transitions and sustain pedal handling tools that prevent stuck notes during switching.

Mute-for-X-Bars Device: Silences playback for specific bar lengths (one bar for fills, four bars for solos). Features a countdown display and automatic playback restoration when time expires, perfect for structured dropouts and clean re-entries.

How Dynamic MIDI Playback Works

The system routes MIDI through virtual cables (IAC Bus on macOS or loopMIDI on Windows) from a dedicated backing track to your instrument track. Place your beat or chords on a backing track with MIDI From = No Input, then route through the MIDI playback sender device to a virtual cable like “MIDI Playback 1.”

On your instrument track, the MIDI Playback Switcher receives from the virtual cable while simultaneously accepting live input from your MIDI controller (Monitor = In or Auto with track armed). The switcher automatically determines whether playback or live notes reach your instrument at any moment.

Key Benefits for Live Performance

Dynamic MIDI Playback ensures natural transitions between prerecorded beats and live performance without timing gaps or manual intervention. The automatic switching responds instantly to your playing, while structured mute lengths provide predictable dropouts for solos and improvisation.

Sustain handling tools manage CC 64 messages with options to block playback until pedal release, keeping performances clean. Test retrigger timing with long chords, set appropriate mute lengths for your performance style, and always label virtual ports clearly for reliable live operation.

Requirements and Compatibility

Requires Ableton Live Suite or Live Standard with Max for Live add-on. Works with virtual MIDI cable software (IAC Bus for macOS, loopMIDI for Windows). Compatible with Ableton Live 10, 11, and 12.

Whether performing electronic sets, finger-drumming, or improvising with chords, Dynamic MIDI Playback delivers precise, hands-on command over beats without stopping the groove.
